Adéu, Barcelona! Adios, España!

Originally uploaded by Daniel Greene

Taken as we were entering the gate to board our plane at BCN. We got home late last night after getting up at 6 AM on Friday morning and getting home 24 1/2 hours later at 10:30 PM Arizona time. I took so many photos of the trip, there’s no way I can dole them out three per day the way I usually do. Today, I uploaded about 51 photos that I shot with my cameraphone, and that’s only 3.7% of the 1364 photos and 13 videos I took with my regular camera during our two-week trip. I hope those people who said, “Take lots of photos! I can’t wait to see them all!” really meant it! ;-)

P.S. There are tons of photos up already with many more to come. Go to Flickr and see my Mediterranean Cruise 2008 and Barcelona 2008 photo collections. Also check out Andy’s photostream.

Settling into the Barri Gotic

This is the street our hotel is off of. I took this just before sundown, when the streetlamps were lit and the setting sun was bathing the Gothic buildings. When I took this, I was standing at the entrance to Carrer de Ferran just off Las Ramblas. We found a little place here on Ferran with free Wi-Fi called Fresh & Ready, where I’m eating a strawberry Danone yogurt from a little glass jar. Andy & I just had our first dinner in town– a beautiful hot plate of grilled veggies soaked in olive oil and another plate of tortilla espanola (potato, egg, and cheese cake).

Today we lucked out since museums are free the first Sunday of every month. We saw the Picasso, geological, and zoological museums. Tonight, we’re thinking of going to a Spanish guitar concert in a Gothic cathedral. It rained quite a bit today, so the museums were a good option.

Just Married!

I’m posting this on the one-week anniversary of our legal same-sex marriage in California. Since I took it with my Sidekick and uploaded it to Flickr right after our civil ceremony, it’s been viewed (as of this writing) 199 times, had received 53 comments, and 6 people call it a favorite.

A million thanks to all who made it possible for us to get married legally!

Happy We Met Five Years Ago

Originally uploaded by Daniel Greene.

Andy & I first laid eyes on each other five years before the day we posed for this photo during our camping trip on Mount Lemmon. We’re still in love and as happy to be together as ever– even more so.

We bumped into each other getting in line for coffee at Claire de Lune coffee house in North Park (San Diego, California) on a Saturday morning, May 24, 2003. About all we said was “Hello!” and “Good morning!” and I wanted to meet him but I was busy having a meeting with a friend and he was busy having a meeting with some friends. Luckily, we met two days later, May 26, at a Memorial Day pool party. And we’ve been together ever since. This is the first year since we met that the days and dates we met coincided again.

Families Can Be Together Forever

Families Can Be Together Forever

Families Can Be Together Forever

This is dedicated to a colleague’s son who died suddenly last week at the age of 4. I attended his funeral at a Mormon church yesterday. The first order of service was singing a hymn called “Families Can Be Together Forever” whose lyrics resonated with me, a gay Jewish man:

“I have a family here on earth.
They are so good to me.
I want to share my life with them
Through all eternity.
Families can be together forever
Though Heavenly Father’s plan.
I always want to be with my own family
And the Lord has shown me how I can.”

(Words: Ruth Muir Gardner, Music: Vanja Y. Watkins)

It is interesting that I heard this song the day after watching the movie Juno and being struck by a line spoken by Ellen Page’s character: “I just need to know that two people can be happy and stay together forever.”

I do believe they can, and it doesn’t matter what religion or sexual preference they are. My grandparents were married for over 64 years before my grandmother died. Andy & I married for life. We’ll be married four years in August, and we intend to stay together “forever” (on the question of life after death, I’m agnostic). In the short time that Andy & I have been together, we’ve seen couples comes and go. But we’ve also known couples, both gay and straight, who have been together for decades. So, although families don’t always stay together forever, they can, and I dedicate this image to the little boy who brought me to a moving reminder of that truth. The little boy loved bubble gum, so that’s what I used to spell out the word Families on our neighbor Elva’s green grass lawn.

Here are a couple of valuable links I came across when searching for the lyrics to this song:

1. The sheet music on the LDS Church Website.
2. The perspective of an LDS woman who taught primary school yet grew up in a broken home. It’s called When Families Aren’t Forever.
